Load Calculation Methods

The Load Monitoring tool has 2 load calculation options: Distance only and Distance + RPE. There are benefits and drawbacks for each.

Distance Only 

This calculation method does not require any additional effort from coaches or athletes. It only considers the volume or distance swam in the workout to calculate load scores. This does not consider any external factors into the load score for the training session. 

Distance + RPE

Adding RPE to distance for calculating load requires each athlete to rate the intensity of the workout after each session. the system then uses these two factors together to more accurately calculate the load for each workout. Having the RPE rating enables the calculation to consider external factors (lack of sleep, nutrition, stress) that can impact how intense a workout feels, rather than basing the load score on distance alone, but does require significantly more effort on the athlete's part to maintain. 

Choosing the right option for your team

For greater load accuracy, we highly encourage selecting Distance+RPE. RPE entries provide a more comprehensive view of athletes' overall well-being.

However, given that younger swimmers can't self-assess RPEs as well, Distance Only is a good option for teams with a lot of young swimmers. Teams who want Load Monitoring without any extra input can also go with Distance Only.

To switch between Distance only and Distance + RPE:

  • Go to the Team Settings page on TritonWear Insights
  • Under Load Calculation Method, select Distance or Distance+RPE as preferred
