A look at how TritonWear measures Speed Underwater, what is considered good vs bad, and how to improve it.
What is Speed Underwater?
This is the distance in meters or yards per second that you travel during the underwater portion of each lap.
How is it measured?
This is measured as the average speed from the underwater start, which is either the moment of dive entry, or the moment the push ends, until the breakout, or when the head exits the water.
What is a good Underwater Speed?
Underwater speed is only half the equation here. You want to have a fast underwater speed, but the key is actually to ensure you maintain your underwater speed until breakout. You have to balance your underwater speed and time to make the most of your underwater phase of each length.
Typical Ranges
Find your preferred stroke and pool length below to see where you sit within the range for your personal underwater speed.
How to Improve this metric?
Underwater Speed can be improved by finding your optimal breakout point. Test your speed vs time balance by executing 2, 3, 4 and even 5 dolphin kicks off the wall. Watch to see how your underwater and overwater speeds compare at each of these turn variations to find your optimal breakout point. The key is to find the sweet spot where your underwater speed is equal to or faster than your overwater speed.
