What is upwards acceleration and how do I use it?

Upwards acceleration is an athlete’s change in speed in a vertical direction (i.e. up and down, towards the bottom and surface of the pool).

For instance, you can see how fast an athlete is moving up to the surface, from push off to breakout, or when taking a breath in butterfly or breaststroke.
